Colts Widget

August 31st, 2005 by acq

So I’ve been using Konfabulator widgets for a while now, in particular the weather and analog clock. I was browsing through the list the other day and saw a Georgia Tech football schedule widget that pulls its data from a live xml file on the Georgia Tech website. I contacted the author of the widget, Sarah, and asked her if she could tell me how to make a similar widget for the Indianapolis Colts. She emailed back with some instructions, but before I could get around to reading them through, she had built it for me! So here it is, if any of you happen to be Colts fans. This widget works with Konfabulator.

Thanks Sarah!

Always Ready

This family needs men to wed their daughters. I already emailed them and told them about adultfriendfinder.com.
The last picture says “Sixth daughter is 19 and always ready”.
Always ready for horse tranquilizers.

His Noodly Appendage

August 25th, 2005 by acq

The best Intelligent Design theory I’ve seen yet.

” Let us remember that there are multiple theories of Intelligent Design. I and many others around the world are of the strong belief that the universe was created by a Flying Spaghetti Monster. It was He who created all that we see and all that we feel. We feel strongly that the overwhelming scientific evidence pointing towards evolutionary processes is nothing but a coincidence, put in place by Him.”

“What these people don’t understand is that He built the world to make us think the earth is older than it really is. For example, a scientist may perform a carbon-dating process on an artifact. He finds that approximately 75% of the Carbon-14 has decayed by electron emission to Nitrogen-14, and infers that this artifact is approximately 10,000 years old, as the half-life of Carbon-14 appears to be 5,730 years. But what our scientist does not realize is that every time he makes a measurement, the Flying Spaghetti Monster is there changing the results with His Noodly Appendage.”

More Better Words

August 25th, 2005 by acq

I haven’t posted video in a while. Working. Building. Changing. Into what? A giant space-robot with thousands of metal teeth and a gold chain with a locket with a picture of a squirrel in it.

So, instead of a video I give you these. Some of my favorite quotes of all time. Because words mean something too, dammit. And Hunter was shot out of a cannon last weekend, so I’ll give you his words first…

“And that, I think, was the handle - -that sense of inevitable victory over the forces of Old and Evil. Not in any mean or military sense; we didn’t need that. Our energy would simply prevail. There was no point in fighting - -on our side or theirs. We had all the momentum; we were riding the crest of a high and beautiful wave. So now, less than five years later, you can go up on a steep hill in Las Vegas and look West, and with the right kind of eyes you can almost see the high-water mark - -the place where the wave finally broke and rolled back.” -HST

“Buy the ticket, take the ride” -HST

“When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro” -HST

“Fighting for peace is like screwing for virginity.” -The Bayou, Baton Rouge, LA

“A man’s ethical behavior should be based effectually on sympathy, education, and social ties; no religious basis is necessary. Man would indeed be in a poor way if he had to be restrained by fear of punishment and hope of reward after death.” -Albert Einstein

“The few took advantage of the ignorant many. They pretended to have received messages from the Unknown. They stood between the helpless multitude and the gods. They were the carriers of flags of truce. At the court of heaven they presented the cause of man, and upon the labor of the deceived they lived.” -Robert Ingersoll

“We find now that the prosperity of nations has depended, not upon their religion, not upon the goodness or providence of some god, but on soil and climate and commerce, upon the ingenuity, industry, and courage of the people, upon the development of the mind, on the spread of education, on the liberty of thought and action; and that in this mighty panorama of national life, reason has built and superstition has destroyed.” -Robert Ingersoll

“I believe in the religion of reason — the gospel of this world; in the development of the mind, in the accumulation of intellectual wealth, to the end that man may free himself from superstitious fear, to the end that he may take advantage of the forces of nature to feed and clothe the world.” -Robert Ingersoll

“No matter how good she looks,
some other guy is sick and tired
of putting up with her shit.” -Unattributed

Poor Bunny

Anyone seen any murders lately? I mean, not on TV, but in person?
Any soldiers watching this? Any cops? Any prisoners?

I’ve been thinking about the U.s. citizen’s deep fear of death for the past few days.
It stems from our culture of commodities and consumerism.
We can’t take our iPods with us when we die.
Life is a series of random events, death is the final event.
We are very much alone in the world, no matter how close we may feel to any other human or animal.

And to compound all these depressing facts, we don’t even get to control our lives.
The rich people in our country dictate what the poorer people get to do.
George Bush gets to tell an 18 year old high-school student to go to Iraq and get his leg blown off.
Haliburton gets to tell Iraqis to stay away from an oil field in Iraq, because they’ve been contracted by the U.S. government to protect and distribute that oil.

Also, videoblogging. And to quote Raymond: “Videoblogging, videoblogging. Videoblogging videoblogging; videoblogging, videoblogging.”

A Case for Neural Networks

August 18th, 2005 by acq

Here are the findings of a research project I began nearly 14 minutes ago:

Unified heterogeneous algorithms have led to many important advances, including model checking and IPv4. Given the current status of replicated models, biologists dubiously desire the study of lambda calculus, which embodies the robust principles of machine learning. Escroll, our new framework for the study of model checking, is the solution to all of these problems.

Raymond Interviews Clark Boyd

August 18th, 2005 by acq

Clark Boyd was interviewing Raymond for The World and Raymond turned the camera around on him. He makes some good points about the disconnect between “Mainstream Media” and the general public. Though, my favorite quote was from Raymond in his thoughts after the interview:

My hope is that with blogging, podcasting and videoblogging we can become more connected. That we can manage to punch enough holes in that membrane that separates us that we can start to understand each other, have more tolerance towards each other, and ultimately build a better world.

Watch the interview and read Raymond’s comments here.
