Deam Wilderness

July 13th, 2006 by nrasche

Full-Size Overview

This weekend Smitty, Brock and myself (Nick) will be entering the Charles C. Deam Wilderness. The Deam Wilderness is located SE of Bloomington, IN. The Deam is 13,000 acres of designated wilderness area surrrounded by the Hoosier National Forest. It is the largest tract of wilderness in the lower Great Lakes Region. We plan on putting a boat on Lake Monroe and getting back to our usual campsite back in the Deam. Lake Monroe is Indiana’s largest lake (not including Lake Michigan). We plan to do shit real big this weekend and have a few videos of foul-mouthed drunk talk.  -nar

American Lung Association of Wisconsin

July 13th, 2006 by quirk

PAN Fan and fellow video maker Bruce (of Brucine) made this video for a friend of his that was trying to quit smoking. He used some footage from this PAN episode.

I was interested in the hypnosis tape that he sampled. I used to smoke quite a bit (pack a day) when I worked in the restaurant industry. Then I quit altogether for a couple years. Then I picked it back up, but much less than before. Now I smoke a few cigarettes per week, and only when drinking alcohol. I can’t separate the two habits in my head. A gin and tonic just isn’t the same without a cigarette.

So anyway, I asked Bruce where I could find the original hypnosis tape, and he was nice enough to MP3 it and upload it to Blip.

This is a dub of a quit-smoking (audio) tape that the American Lung Association of Wisconsin put out sometime in the 1970’s. I helped me to quit. I’m putting it up here for the use of anybody who wants to give it a try. Probably best not to listen to this while driving.

Here is the MP3 File

Thanks Bruce.

Highway to the Danger Zone

July 12th, 2006 by quirk

Danger zone being rural Indiana.

The inspector general of the Department of Homeland Security, in a report [pdf] released Tuesday, found that as of January, Indiana, with 8,591 potential terrorist targets, had 50 percent more listed sites than New York (5,687) and more than twice as many as California (3,212), ranking the state the most target-rich place in the nation.

The database is used by the Homeland Security Department to help divvy up the hundreds of millions of dollars in antiterrorism grants each year, including the program announced in May that cut money to New York City and Washington by 40 percent, while significantly increasing spending for cities including Louisville, Ky., and Omaha.

One business owner who learned from a reporter that a company named Amish Country Popcorn was on the list was at first puzzled. The businessman, Brian Lehman, said he owned the only operation in the country with that name.

“I am out in the middle of nowhere,” said Mr. Lehman, whose business in Berne, Ind., has five employees and grows and distributes popcorn. “We are nothing but a bunch of Amish buggies and tractors out here. No one would care.”

But on second thought, he came up with an explanation: “Maybe because popcorn explodes?”

The PAN 1973

July 12th, 2006 by quirk

The PAN has been redesigned to look less like a web site and more like a 1970’s rec room.

Thanks to Noah and Milt for this.

I’m still working out bugs (comments aren’t working, contributor pages not laid out right).

Enjoy.

The links to these videos have been missing since Q changed servers. Maybe he deleted them due to their enormous size. At any rate I have put them back up for the time being.
